Blue Phones

Approximately 400 exterior phones are strategically located throughout Yale’s campus and are readily identified at night by blue lights located above or near them. You can reach any Yale extension from these phones by simply dialing the last five digits of a phone number. In most cases this will be 2-XXXX or 6-XXXX. The phones are also equipped with red emergency buttons for direct connection to the University Police for police, fire, or medical emergencies. In an emergency, you can just hit the red “help” button and keep walking to remove yourself from a dangerous situation; the campus police will know your location and will head there immediately. For a map of phone locations, visit Blue Phones.

...

Also, University Security operates a security escort service on campus for any member of the University community who requires an escort. The escort service will provide you with a walking escort to or from any location within a reasonable walking distance on the campus, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Simply call 203-432-WALK (9255), or 2-WALK from any Yale University phone, to request a uniformed walking escort. A uniformed Yale Security Officer will be dispatched to your location and escort you to your final on-campus destination. It is advisable to request the escort approximately 15 minutes prior to the intended departure time.

For wine and liquor, one favorite is Odd Bins (1 Whitney Avenue at Grove Street), which is near the law school and has a very knowledgeable staff. Restaurants, Bars, and Coffee Houses

Dining may be what New Haven does best. You’ll find a variety of good food, from cheap late-night eats to gourmet prix fixe menus. Explore the area’s restaurants, and venture beyond campus to Ninth Square, State Street, Wooster Square, and Branford. Delivery options can be difficult to find, although some are available through Grubhub and DoorDash. Links you might visit for other suggestions on dining include:

Food carts can be found all over campus, at the Med School and up Prospect Street in front of Ingalls Rink (“The Whale”). Trucks usually have some sort of online presence that will notify customers of where the truck will be on a given day, and they are very affordable.

Yale ID Services

University Affiliate ID cards are available for spouses and same-sex partners of Yale students who have a marriage license or civil union document. Some of the University resources to which these IDs allow access are the Payne Whitney Gym (for a fee), University libraries, and the shuttle service. To obtain an affiliate ID, please bring your spouse/partner and a copy of your marriage license or civil union document to the Registrar’s Office. The Registrar’s Office will issue a temporary ID, which can then be taken to the ID Center located at 57 Lock Street, 1st Floor (behind Yale Health) hours of operation M-F 9-12 and 1-3 and exchanged for a permanent ID.
