Blue Phones

Approximately 400 exterior phones are strategically located throughout Yale’s campus and are readily identified at night by blue lights located above or near them. You can reach any Yale extension from these phones by simply dialing the last five digits of a phone number. In most cases this will be 2-XXXX or 6-XXXX. The phones are also equipped with red emergency buttons for direct connection to the University Police for police, fire, or medical emergencies. In an emergency, you can just hit the red “help” button and keep walking to remove yourself from a dangerous situation; the campus police will know your location and will head there immediately. For a map of phone locations, visit Blue Phones.

...

Also, University Security operates a security escort service on campus for any member of the University community who requires an escort. The escort service will provide you with a walking escort to or from any location within a reasonable walking distance on the campus, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Simply call 203-432-WALK (9255), or 2-WALK from any Yale University phone, to request a uniformed walking escort. A uniformed Yale Security Officer will be dispatched to your location and escort you to your final on-campus destination. It is advisable to request the escort approximately 15 minutes prior to the intended departure time.

Groceries and Specialty Foods

Your supermarket options in New Haven are a bit limited. One Super Stop & Shop is located just past campus at 150 Whalley Avenue (a short, three minute drive) and another Super Stop & Shop is located in Hamden (a twenty minute drive at 2335 Dixwell Avenue). Stop & Shop also does home delivery for a reasonable fee through Peapod.

For a wide selection of organic and local vegetables, fruits, and other goods, Edge of the Woods is located at 379 Whalley Avenue, a few blocks past the Whalley Avenue Super Stop & Shop.

...

For wine and liquor, one favorite is Odd Bins (1 Whitney Avenue at Grove Street), which is near the law school and has a very knowledgeable staff. Many people also like the Wine Thief (378 Whitney Avenue at Lawrence Street; 181 Crown Street at Temple Street). If you want the best and largest selection for good wine, try Mt. Carmel Wine, 2977 Whitney Avenue, Hamden; (203) 281-0800; they also deliver. Amity Wines and Spirits (95 Amity Road #2) has the largest liquor and craft beer selection in town.

Restaurants – Food Trucks

New Haven is known for its booming food-truck scene, and on any street during the workweek you’re bound to run into a food truck. Popular ones include Fryborg, an all-french-fry truck and The Cupcake Truck. Other food trucks include Lunch Box 23, The Jitter Bus and Szabo’s Seafood. Food carts can be found all over campus, at the Med School and up Prospect Street in front of Ingalls Rink (“The Whale”). Trucks usually have some sort of online presence that will notify customers of where the truck will be on a given day, and they are very affordable.
