Getting Started at YLS
How do I complete the I-9?
When will I get my NetID?
You will receive an email with your NetID when your appointment process is complete. Information on activating your NetID is available here: NetID
When can I get my ID and where do I get my ID?
You can get your Yale ID when you arrive on campus. To get your ID go to the Yale ID center which is located at 57 Lock Street, 1st Floor (behind the Yale Health building). You will need your Yale NetID and a government issued photo ID.
From the Sterling Law Building go out through the Grove Street door and make a left on to Grove Street. Take a right on Ashmun Street and right on Lock Street. The ID Center is located between the Yale Police Department and Yale Health.
When can I get my office keys?
Your assistant will have your office keys, please contact them prior to your arrival on campus to arrange a meeting time and place. If your assistant is not available contact Building Services at 203 432 4980. Further information is available here:Law School Office and Keys
Who do I contact for help with ordering supplies?
Your assistant can order supplies for you.
When will I be able to meet my faculty assistant and what tasks can I give them to do?

Where is my faculty assistant located?

Can I get a research assistant?

When will I be able to post to Canvas?
Your Canvas course site will be accessible as soon as your NetID and other accounts are setup. Once you have activated your NetID, go to http://canvas.yale.edu to access your course site. If you have trouble accessing Canvas or you do not see your course site, please reach out to canvas.law@yale.edu or call the YLS IT help desk at 203 432 0821.
Buildings
How do I access the Yale Law School Buildings?
Your Yale ID card allows you access to all Law School buildings. Wave your ID card by the card reader located near the building doorway, this will unlock the door and allow entry.
Will I get an orientation to the building?
Please work with Academic Affairs to arrange an orientation and tour of the Law School buildings.
Will I have access to the law library?
Yes, the main reading room is located on the third floor of the Sterling Law Building. Your Yale ID card is used to check-out books. For more information on library hours and services visit the library website at: https://library.law.yale.edu
Where are the restrooms located?
Restrooms are located on all floors, except the first floor of the Sterling Law Building.
Classrooms
Can I see my classroom?
Yes, you are welcome to look at the room you will be teaching in. Please work with Building Services, 203 432 4980 for access to classrooms prior to the start of the term. Most classrooms are locked when classes are not in session. If you would like to learn about he audio-visual equipment in the room you are teaching in, email av.law@yale.edu to request a meeting.
I will be using PowerPoint. Can I get AV support? Who sets that up? Do I have to make an appointment or schedule ahead of time?
All classrooms at YLS have built-in audio-visual equipment. The equipment can be turned on and off using the touch-screen panel in the room. Instructions on using the systems are available in each room next to the touch-screen. The AV team is happy to meet with you in the classroom you are teaching in and review the equipment. Please email av.law@yale.edu if you are interested in setting up an appointment.
In addition, AV staff will meet you before your class and assist you in the use of the classroom technology.
To request AV support for your class, you can:
Email av.law@yale.edu, with the date, time, classroom, and service needed.
Use the online AV scheduling system by going to https://av.law.yale.edu.
Ask your assistant to request AV support.
I use a whiteboard to teach. Can that be provided?
All classrooms in the Sterling Law Building have blackboards. Whiteboards are available in the Baker Hall classrooms.
Will there be chalk in the classrooms?
Yes, Building Services ensures there is chalk available in classrooms. If you find you are in need of chalk, please call Building Services at 203 432 4980.
Classes and Students
I will be rescheduling some of my classes to another time how do I communicate that with the Registrar’s Office and how do I schedule classroom space?
Please notify your class via Canvas of any class schedule changes and email registrar.law@yale.edu to coordinate rescheduling your class and reserving a classroom
Will I be able to have lunches with my students? What are the guidelines? How do I get reimbursed?

Your assistant can submit your allowable meal expenses for reimbursement. Note: all reimbursements much be submitted within 120 days of the date of the expense. Expenses submitted after 120 days will be considered taxable income.
Can I give honorarium to a class speaker?
Can I give a student a prize?
Yes, you can nominate a student paper for a prize. An email message soliciting nominations will circulate at the end of Spring semester. For more information contact Associate Dean Monica Maldonado via email at: monica.maldonado@yale.edu.
Can I give a student a gift card if they do something for my class? (graphic design for ex)
Who do I contact for a reimbursement?
Your assistant can submit a reimbursement request for you. If your assistant is not available or if you have a question about a reimbursement please contact Jennifer Truong, in the Business Office at 203 432 4977 or via email at jennifer.truong@yale.edu
How do I approve my Workday expense reports?
To approve an expense report login to Workday at https://www.myworkday.com/yale. Outstanding expense report approvals will be listed in your Workday inbox. Click the report you want to approve, review the expenses then click the Approve button.
